SolidGigs vs DesignCrowd: external lead curation or a design contest marketplace?

Choose SolidGigs when you already manage clients independently and mainly want more external freelance opportunities. Choose DesignCrowd when you are a designer who wants contest/project access and platform-administered payouts enough to accept speculative submission risk and a 15% designer commission.

AlreadyChecked Verdict

No universal winner: choose broad external lead curation or a design contest marketplace.

SolidGigs fits freelancers who want broader external opportunities and already manage clients independently. DesignCrowd fits designers who value contest/project access and platform-administered payouts enough to accept speculative submission risk, a standard 15% designer commission and platform-specific contract rules.

Best for you if… you compare the acquisition model first, then weigh fixed subscription cost against contest risk, percentage commission, payout methods and the absence of escrow.

No universal winner. $35 per month versus a 15% commission does not settle the decision without actual project economics.

At a glance

SolidGigs

Cost: 14-day free trial, then $35/month or $350/year.

Model: curated external opportunities; downstream client transaction remains outside SolidGigs.

DesignCrowd

Registration: free for designers.

Designer fee: standard 15% commission on designer payments.

Model: paid design projects and contests with platform rules and payouts.

Free registration does not mean fee-free work

DesignCrowd currently says designer registration is free, but its fee/help pages also say it retains a standard 15% commission on designer payments, including place payments, participation payments, paid invites, tips and other designer payments through the platform.

Guaranteed/Committed does not pay every entrant

A Guaranteed/Committed project means the customer commits to choosing a winner and gives up the project-budget refund right. It does not mean every designer who submits is guaranteed payment.

A project marked Payment Not Guaranteed can remain refundable under the platform rules. Non-winning submissions generally receive no payment unless a qualifying participation payment exists.

Participation payments are limited

Current help says participation payments are typically $10 or $20 for some non-winning designers. A project can have a limited number or none, quality standards apply, and DesignCrowd reserves the right not to pay a particular submission. They are not universal compensation for speculative work.

DesignCrowd explicitly says it is not escrow

Current DesignCrowd Terms state that DesignCrowd does not provide escrow services. Client project funding should therefore not be described as money held in escrow for the designer or as a universal payment guarantee.

Current payouts are Payoneer or PayPal

Current designer payout guidance lists Payoneer or PayPal. Payoneer is described as the preferred method, while provider/location fees and currency-conversion costs vary. Skrill is no longer a current payout option. That means payouts should not be described as universally instant or fee-free.

Verification changes access—not certainty

Designers who want to participate in paid contests can be required to pass account verification based on DesignCrowd quality standards and customer-preference data. Verification does not guarantee project access, wins, client quality, safety or earnings.

Winning work carries relationship rules

Current Designer/Client contract terms transfer qualifying winning/approved work rights to the client. Current Service Terms also include a 90-day no-contact rule after a paid project unless the client invites direct contact. DesignCrowd is therefore not simply an unrestricted lead directory.

Which fits you?

I sell services beyond design

SolidGigs fits better when you want broader external freelance lead discovery.

I want design contests and project submissions

DesignCrowd fits better when the design-specific project/contest channel is useful enough to justify speculative work and the 15% commission.

I need every submission paid

DesignCrowd is a poor fit: Guaranteed/Committed means a winner is chosen, not that every entrant is paid.

I need escrow

Do not infer that from DesignCrowd client funding; its current Terms explicitly say it does not provide escrow services.
