Technical SEO software comparison

Semrush vs Screaming Frog: which SEO tool do you need?

They are not direct substitutes. Semrush is the stronger first choice for ongoing cloud SEO/search visibility, daily rank tracking, keyword/competitor research, Site Audit and AI-search monitoring. Screaming Frog is the stronger first choice for deep configurable technical crawling and extraction with local/server control. Serious technical-SEO workflows often use both.

AlreadyChecked Verdict

Choose Semrush for recurring cloud visibility and monitoring; choose Screaming Frog for deep technical crawling—or use both when the work needs both layers.

This is a workflow-scope decision, not a simple winner. Semrush combines recurring research, daily rank tracking and cloud Site Audit. Screaming Frog gives the operator much deeper crawl configuration, extraction and machine-controlled technical investigation.

Best for you if… you decide whether the main job is ongoing search visibility, deep technical crawling, or both before comparing prices and crawl numbers that use different operating models.

What “Unlimited*” means in Screaming Frog

The paid pricing page labels the crawl limit Unlimited*, but the asterisk matters. Screaming Frog itself says the maximum URLs you can crawl depends on allocated memory and storage. Paid removes the product's 500-URL cap; it does not create hardware-independent infinite crawling.

Where Semrush is different

Semrush's current SEO plan combines Site Audit with keyword/competitor research, Position Tracking, 500 keywords tracked daily across 5 monitored sites, and AI-search visibility functions. Current Semrush Site Audit documentation separately says the named Pro SEO Toolkit can crawl up to 100,000 pages per month and 20,000 pages per audit. That documentation is toolkit-specific, so do not silently apply those exact limits to every differently packaged Semrush subscription.

Where Screaming Frog is different

The current paid SEO Spider adds advanced configuration, save/open crawls, JavaScript rendering, crawl comparison, custom source-code search and extraction, Google Analytics/Search Console/PageSpeed integrations, accessibility auditing and other technical-crawl controls. Licences are per individual user. One user can use the licence on multiple devices subject to reasonable use, but multiple people need separate licences.

Renewal and expiry are different too

Screaming Frog licences are annual. Its current FAQ says auto-renew is not enabled by default; if it was enabled at purchase it can be cancelled in account subscriptions. When the licence expires, the software returns to the restricted free version, including the 500-URL crawl cap and restricted paid features.

Which route fits your actual workflow?

Choose Semrush when…

Recurring cloud SEO/search visibility, daily ranking data and broad research/monitoring are the job.

Choose Screaming Frog when…

Configurable technical crawling, extraction and local/server control are the job.

Use both when…

You need ongoing visibility plus deeper technical investigation. The current evidence does not support pretending one replaces every function of the other.

Important limitations

Semrush cloud audit limits and Screaming Frog machine-dependent crawl capacity are different models, not directly interchangeable numbers. This page does not claim either tool has universally superior issue detection, crawler quality, keyword/backlink data or AI-search data.
