SolidGigs vs Guru: curated external leads or a bidding marketplace?

Choose SolidGigs when you already know how to pitch and manage clients and your bottleneck is finding external opportunities. Choose Guru when you want Jobs, Quotes, Agreements, WorkRooms, invoices and optional SafePay/Arbitration inside one marketplace—and you accept Bid limits, membership-linked job fees and verification rules.

AlreadyChecked Verdict

No universal winner: choose curated external leads or a bidding marketplace.

SolidGigs fits freelancers who already manage contracts and payments but want less lead hunting. Guru fits freelancers who want Quotes, Agreements, WorkRooms, invoices and optional SafePay/Arbitration inside one marketplace and accept its Bids, memberships and job fees.

Best for you if… you choose between simpler fixed-cost acquisition and a marketplace transaction layer based on which part of your workflow is actually missing.

There is no honest universal winner. SolidGigs sells lead discovery. Guru provides a marketplace and transaction workflow. Comparing only $35 with a 9% or 5% fee ignores what each product actually does.

SolidGigs vs Guru at a glance

SolidGigs

Best for: established freelancers who can pitch, contract, invoice and collect independently but want less lead hunting.

Current cost: 14-day free trial, then $35/month or $350/year.

Model: curated external lead discovery; SolidGigs says it takes no percentage of freelancer earnings.

Guru

Best for: freelancers who want a bidding marketplace plus Agreements, WorkRooms, invoices and optional SafePay.

Current Basic: $0 membership, 10 Bids/month and a listed 9% job fee.

Paid memberships: currently add Bids/features and list job fees down to 5% on Executive.

Guru Basic is free membership—not fee-free paid work

Guru currently lists Basic at $0. It includes 10 Bids per month, and the current pricing table lists a 9% job fee for paid invoices.

A Bid is used to send a Quote to a job. Current Guru help says additional Bids can be purchased, purchased Bids are non-refundable, and they do not expire.

So “free Basic” is an access statement, not a claim that winning and completing paid work has no platform cost.

Guru paid memberships trade subscription cost for more features and lower listed job fees

Basic+

$11.95 monthly or $8.95/month effective on the annual display; 50 Bids/month; listed 9% job fee.

Professional

$21.95 monthly or $15.95/month effective annually; 50 Bids/month; listed 7% job fee.

Business

$33.95 monthly or $24.95/month effective annually; 50 Bids/month; listed 6% job fee.

Executive

$49.95 monthly or $39.95/month effective annually; 50 Bids/month; listed 5% job fee.

Those plans can change the economics and platform features. They do not prove more jobs, more replies or better outcomes.

The Employer can sometimes share the Guru job fee—but do not assume it

Guru says the freelancer job fee depends on membership. It also says an Employer can contribute up to 5% toward that fee depending on the Agreement.

That can reduce the freelancer's effective fee, including to zero in some example configurations, but it is Agreement-dependent. It is not a default entitlement and should not be used as the headline fee for every Guru job.

Guru has a transaction layer SolidGigs does not

Guru's marketplace workflow includes job search, Quotes, Agreements, WorkRooms, file sharing, invoices, payment terms and a Cash Account for received payments.

SolidGigs takes the opposite approach: it helps you find external leads, then sends you to the original opportunity source. Your downstream contract, invoicing, payment and dispute system is whatever the client or source uses.

That difference matters more than comparing one headline fee with another.

SafePay is useful—but optional

Guru SafePay is a shared account the Employer funds before work. The freelancer can set a minimum SafePay balance in an Agreement and see that funds are available before starting.

Guru explicitly says SafePay is not mandatory and warns that work done without funds in SafePay is at the freelancer's own risk.

That makes funded SafePay a meaningful workflow protection. It does not make every Guru project guaranteed payment.

Guru Arbitration only applies to qualifying funded SafePay disputes

Guru currently says Arbitration is available when there are funds in SafePay and the dispute falls within the qualifying platform workflow.

The current Arbitration fee is generally the greater of $25 or 5% of the SafePay balance. Guru says if the SafePay balance is $50 or less, it waives the fee and distributes the balance equally.

Arbitration therefore should not be presented as universal payment protection or a guaranteed favorable ruling.

Guru identity verification can add a $4.95 processing fee

Guru says it is moving toward requiring freelancer identity verification. Current freelancer guidance requires identity/address/photo/government-ID information plus credit-card verification.

After the credit card is verified, Guru currently says it charges a non-refundable $4.95 processing fee for the freelancer ID-verification request. If Guru prompts verification, its current account-limit guidance says Quotes and fund transfers can be blocked until verification is complete.

That is an account-compliance cost/boundary—not proof that every Guru user or project is safe.

SolidGigs keeps the acquisition cost simpler

SolidGigs currently lists $35/month or $350/year after a 14-day trial and says it takes no percentage of freelancer earnings.

The tradeoff is that it does not provide Guru's hosted Quote/Agreement/WorkRoom/SafePay structure for the external opportunities it finds.

Use fee arithmetic as an input, not as the verdict.

Which one fits you?

I already run contracts and payments myself

SolidGigs fits better when finding opportunities—not transaction management—is the bottleneck.

I want a marketplace WorkRoom and funded-payment option

Guru fits better when Quotes, Agreements, invoices and optional SafePay solve a real operational problem.

I dislike bidding limits and percentage job fees

SolidGigs may fit better. It uses a fixed subscription and says it takes no percentage of earnings, but you manage the downstream transaction yourself.

I do not want to pay a lead subscription before winning work

Guru Basic may fit better as an access test. The membership price is $0, but Bids are limited and job fees apply when paid work is invoiced.

I want guaranteed clients or payment

Neither. SolidGigs curates leads, not guaranteed wins; Guru SafePay/Arbitration are scoped workflow protections, not universal guarantees.

A practical two-channel test

  1. Use one service offering so you are comparing acquisition channels rather than different products.
  2. Track Guru: Bids used, Quotes sent, replies, Agreements, paid invoices, job fees, membership/Bid costs, SafePay use and dispute/payment friction.
  3. Track SolidGigs: qualified leads, search time saved, pitches, replies, wins, subscription cost and downstream payment costs.
  4. Compare net value. Include time, percentage fees, subscription cost, protection value and actual conversion.
